Abstract

Purpose Recipients in the lung transplant (LTx) population have been shifting towards a more “elderly group.” According to ISHLT database, LTx recipient age peaked at 50-59 years old and elderly population has been increasing over the past few decades whereas the younger population is declining. Currently over 25% of LTx recipients are over 60 years old. Methods and Materials We retrospectively reviewed our patients who underwent isolated lung transplantation from 2000 to 2011. A total of 492-patient’s data were examined by Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression model analysis, including sub-group analysis (≥70 vs the younger group). Results Of 492 patients, 51 were older than 70-yo (10.4%). In comparison with the younger group ( Conclusions LTx appears to be feasible in the elderly patient population >70 yo if careful selection (medical) criteria are used including preop functional scores. Once the patient is selected according to these criteria, age alone should not be a significant predictor of short and long term mortality.
