Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Danazol (DZ), a weak androgen derivative, is a drug used for conservative treatment for endometriosis. DZ has been administered orally, and has often induced some adverse effect such as liver dysfunction, acne and increase in body weight. To exert its direct effect on pelvic endometriosis and to minimize these side effects, we have utilized vaginal DZ suppository since 1991. In our preliminary study, in which DZ concentration in pelvic organs were measured after vaginal DZ suppository use, we have shown that concentrations in the peritoneal fluid and the pelvic organs after vaginal administration were equal to those after oral administration, whereas the serum concentration was almost undetectable in the vaginal group.
