Abstract

Objective To conduct a retrospective questionnaire survey on clinical nurses and to explore their applicability evaluation and suggestions for their health assessment textbooks. Methods Totally 161 clinical nurses from 3 hospitals (1 Class Ⅲ Grade A hospital, 1 Class Ⅲ Grade B hospital and 1 Class Ⅱ Grade A hospital) in Suzhou, Jiangsu province and 158 from 3 hospitals (2 ClassⅢ Grade B hospitals and 1 Class Ⅱ Grade A hospital) in Zhangjiagang were selected by stratified random sampling and investigated with the Health Assessment Textbook Applicability Evaluation as well as Textbook Content Evaluation and Revision Suggestions from May 2017 to August 2019. Results The evaluation scores of undergraduate and specialized nurses for the applicability of their health assessment textbooks were (8.62±1.27) and (8.86±1.14) , which were stratified as very good. The proportion of nurses who considered the of health assessment textbooks used in universities and colleges as very and relatively applicable accounted for over 80%. They had a higher evaluation for common symptoms, physical examination methods and as well as inquiry methods and content in the textbooks, while they had a lower evaluation for psychological assessment, social assessment and electrocardiographic examination. Conclusions The overall quality and clinical applicability of China's health assessment textbooks used in universities and colleges is good, but the clinical applicability of university textbooks is lower than that of college textbooks. It is suggested that the should be closer to clinical practice when writing the textbooks; importance should be attached to the training of clinical thinking, problem analysis and solving ability, nursing diagnosis ability and reflective ability; university textbooks should focus on innovation of characteristics and style; college textbooks should have new knowledge and new technology; the quality of laboratory examinations, electrocardiogram examinations, imaging examinations and social assessments should be improved, and review questions, training instructions, videos or photo CDs should be added, so that the knowledge and ability of nursing students can be more in line with clinical work needs after learning.
