Abstract

A new graduate nurse recently asked me if taking an orthostatic blood pressure (BP) includes taking a pulse. Taking an orthostatic BP is just that, getting the BP; however, orthostatic vital signs should include the pulse. When one is asked to document whether a patient has orthostatic changes, the vital signs taken should be a BP and a pulse. The positions the patient is in when these vital signs are taken depend on the patient’s condition. If the patient can tolerate position changes, vital signs should be taken lying down, sitting/dangling the feet, and standing.
