Abstract

Gertie F. Marx, MD, an anesthesiologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has elicited the aid of 11 anesthesiologists, five pediatricians, three obstetricians, and one statistician, 18 specialists in all, in writing a scholarly book devoted to the first days after birth. Good writing with an almost uniformly clear style shows that the authors, most of whom are from the New York City area, were chosen wisely. The bulk of the book, including ten of the 15 chapters, is an update and review of neonatal physiology, pathology, and treatment. An outstanding example of the latter is a chapter by Ermelando V. Cosmi, Professor of Anesthesiology and of Obstetrics, University of Rome, on "Exchange Transfusion of the Newborn Infant."
