Abstract

This review of clinical geriatric nursing research covers the 30 years, 1952 to 1982, that coincide with the era of nursing research journals and journals of gerontological/geriatric nursing (1975 to 1982). Early in the period covered, there were few studies in the care of the elderly, but at this time a number of nurses are choosing clinical research in this area. There have been few funded studies in clinical geriatric nursing, and much of the published research has been that which met requirements for graduate degrees in nursing. At this time there is a turning point: clinical studies are increasing in number and quality, and there are more opportunities to publish in refereed journals. There are excellent means of retrieval through computerized searches and the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, International Nursing Index, and Index Medicus. The future promises a productive and exciting era for clinical geriatric nursing research. This chapter recounts the prologue.
