Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical features of various glucose metabolism disorders in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods A retrospective analysis of various glucose metabolism situations in 698 patients with HCC was performed from January 2003 to December 2007 in the Second and the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to glucose metabolism status: normal glucose group(472 cases), hypoglycemia group(20 cases), pre-diabetes group(76 cases) and diabetes group(130 cases). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis H test were employed to compare differences of age and laboratory chemical indicators among the 4 groups. Results Among 698 HCC patients, 563 were male and 135 were female, with an average age of (55±13) years. The patients in pre-diabetes and diabetes groups were significantly older than those in normal glucose group ((58±13), (60±13) and (53±15) years, respectively; all P<0.05); the patients in diabetes group were older than those in hypoglycemia group((51±14) years, P<0.05). The level of total cholesterol in diabetes group was significantly lower than that in normal glucose group((4.7±1.7) vs (4.0±1.7) mmol/L, t=2.266, P<0.05). Conclusion In patients with HCC, the patients with diabetes mellitus are older than those with normal blood glucose and hypoglycemia, and total cholesterol is lower in patient with diabetes mellitus than that in patients with normal blood glucose. Key words: Hepatocellular carcinoma; Glucose metabolism disorders; Diabetes mellitus; Pre-diabetes; Hypoglycemia
