Abstract

Adult patients can present hip pain secondary to different causes. Careful and complete history and physical examination are essential in making an accurate and timely diagnosis. Assessment of hip pain can be quite complex and therefore a standardized protocol of clinical evaluation is proposed to identify the more common hip pathologies. A comprehensive clinical examination which evaluates gait, range of hip motion, specific tests in supine, lateral and prone positions leads to the differential diagnosis between intra-articular pathologies and extra-articular soft tissue and tendon pathologies.
