Abstract

Objective To investigate therapeutic efficiency of isoflavone on middle and severe dry eye of menopause female. Methods A prospective random double-blind controlled study.Seventy-two cases diagnosed dry eye of menopause female (aged from 40 to 50 years old) in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from August 2010 to March 2011 were divided into two groups:isoflavone group and control group,38 cases in each group.All groups had 0.05% refresh drops.All patients had been detected and evaluated by subjective symptoms of dry eye,visual acuity,corneal fluorescent staining (FI),break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer Ⅰ test (SIT) at pre-therapy and 3,7,28 d of post-therapy.All groups had been compared and analyzed by F test and sample mean difference (SMD) or median difference (MD) comparison between pre-therapy and post-therapy.Results The subjective symptoms of dry eye (except of tear),FI,BUT and SIT of middle and severe dry eye of isoflavone group had been improved at 28 d after therapy compared with those of pre-therapy:SMD=1.24 (visual tiredness),1.32 (dry and unsmooth sensation),0.88 (foreign body sensation),1.42 (burning sensation),1.28 (photophobia),1.64 (pain),1.56 (red eye); MD=0.30 (visual acuity),5.00 (FI),5.00 (BUT),5.00 (SIT) [F =22.60 (visual tiredness),23.40 (dry and unsmooth sensation),19.20 (foreign body sensation),28.90 (burning sensation),18.50 (photophobia),36.80 (pain),15.20 (red eye),11.50(visual acuity),209.85 (FI),276.80 (BUT),325.42(SIT); P <0.05].The control group hadn't significantly been improved at 28 d after therapy:SMD=0.16 (visual tiredness),0.22(dry and unsmooth sensation),0.13 (foreign body sensation),0.42 (burning sensation),0.28 (red eye); MD=0.20 (visual acuity),0.50 (F1),0.50 (BUT),0.50 (SIT)[F =2.12visual tiredness),1.98 (dry and unsmooth sensation),1.64 (foreign body sensation),3.32 (burning sensation),3.47 (red eye),1.36 (visual acuity),4.08 (FI),3.16(BUT),3.88 (SIT); P >0.05].SIT of isoflavone group had been improved more significantly after therapy (F =6.22,P <0.05). Conclusions Isoflavone can significantly improve middle and severe dry eye of menopause female. Key words: Isoflavone; Xerophthalmia; Treatment; Female
