Oral antibiotics are a primary indication for inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris. Recently, levofloxacin (Tavanic®, Hoechst Marion Roussell; Cravit®, Daiichi Pharmaceutical) at a dose of 100 mg three times daily has been reported to be effective for inflammatory acne. To improve the effectiveness of levofloxacin we investigated the efficacy of oral levofloxacin at a dose of 200 mg twice daily in acne patients with inflammatory lesions, the sensitivity of clinical isolates to levofloxacin and the levels of levofloxacin in acne lesions. An open study was performed in acne patients who received oral levofloxacin at a dose of 200 mg twice daily for 2 or 4 weeks. The minimum inhibitory concentration of levofloxacin for the isolated bacteria was determined and the concentration of levofloxacin in the comedo contents was measured. Inflammatory lesions were reduced by 51.2 and 80.4% at 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. No patient experienced treatment-related adverse events. The minimum inhibitory concentration of ...
