Abstract

Objective To investigate the situation of children with norovirus (NV)gastroenteritis in Mianyang region, Sichuan Province. Methods This was a prospective observational study with instrutional ethics approval and written parents consent. Stool specimens of children with acute gastroenteritis (excluded rotavirus and bacterial enteritis) were collected during January to December 2010 in Mianyang Central Hospital, and clinical data, including children age, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and disease conditions were analyzed. Results A total of 650 cases were collected, and 204 (31.38%) of them were confirmed with NV antigen-positive. The NV infection children was at age of 1-114 months (P25=7.00; P50=9.00; P75=13.75; Meadian=9, Mode=8). The high incidence of NV was at the age of 6 to 12 months, and the summit season was summer (from August to October). Vomit was the dominant symptom in children with NV gastroenteritis(χ2=22.954, P=0.00). Conclusion NV gastroenteritis is more common in summer in Mianyang region, and vomit is more frequently occurred in NV gastroenteritis, other clinical symptoms which were difficult to distinguish with other acute gastroenteritis.
