Abstract

A total of 78 patients with chronic vertebrogenic pain in the lower part of the spine were studied: 23 (29.5%) with lumbar root syndromes and 55 (70.5%) with reflex lumbar syndromes not in exacerbation. Patients with lumbar dorsopathy and root compression syndromes were characterized by high pain levels with a marked neuropathic component, lower quality of life, and significantly lower serum serotonin levels, which correlated with the severity of neuropathic pain and depression.
