Abstract

Advanced liver disease is a classic example of multi-system failure resulting from a single organ disease. Minor surgery on patients with advanced disease remains a challenge and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Careful assessment is essential to grade risks. Liver transplantation is associated with a favourable outcome and has become the treatment of choice for advanced liver disease. The multi-system pathophysiology of liver disease is examined with a systematic approach.
