Abstract

Aim: Traditional herbal (Kampo) medicines have been used since ancient times to treat patients with various types of musculoskeletal pain. The aim of this study is to present patients with menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms successfully treated with Kampo medicines, and to discuss in their application for the menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms. Methods: We herein described the successful treatment of 3 patients with menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms using the Kampo medicines: Keishikaryojutsubuto and Boiogito, or Keishikaryojutubuto alone. Results: Our 3 female patients (average age: 52.3; range 50-54) did not fulfil the Diagnostic criteria for any rheumatic or connective tissue diseases with joint or muscle pain. They were diagnosed with menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms based on their clinical feature. The Kampo treatment ameliorated arthralgia, myalgia, and stiffness in the hands of these patients, which markedly improved their QOL (quality of life). Conclusion: Kampo medicines may be safe and useful as an additional or alternative treatment for menopausal musculoskeletal symptoms, in the field of rheumatology, in addition to primary healthcare.
