Summary

Introduction

Dear Editor, Joint infections can be caused by bacteria, fungi or viruses. Among these three types, bacterial infections are considered the most serious problem as they occur more frequently. Bacteria are responsible for septic arthritis in 50% of children under the age of 20 [1]. Rapid recognition is necessary to initiate the appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Empiric antibiotic treatment is based on the patient’s age and most likely organism involved in a given community [2]. Based on the above-mentioned facts, the objective of the study was to describe the clinical characteristics and microbiological findings of septic arthritis in children admitted to the Institute of Tropical Medicine, the main referral center for infectious diseases of Paraguay
