Abstract

The novel influenza A (H7N9) virus can cause severe illness, including pneumonia and acute respiratory disorder syndrome (ARDS), with high rates of intensive care unit admission and death. We report the first case of human infection with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus in Shenzhen, China. The patient was a 38-year-old man. His infection was eventually confirmed 9 days after illness onset. No symptom was found in his 135 close contacts. The patient recovered 43 days after illness onset. Oseltamivir, anti-infective drugs, methylprednisolone, albumin, and intravenous immunoglobulin were administered. Antiviral therapy in the early stage and sufficient supportive management are key to the treatment of infections with this virus, and proper doses of methylprednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin are recommended.
