Abstract

[Objective]To study the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of primary appendix adenocarcinoma.[Methods]The clinical datas of 11 patients with primary appendix adenocarcinoma treated in our hospital from July 1990 to July 2010 were retrospectively analyzed.[Results]Primary appendix adenocarcinoma was a rare malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract. The clinical presention was usually non-specific.The median age at the time of presentation was 61 (39-84)years old, male vs.female was 4 vs.7.Operations were performed in all patients, preoperative abdominal CT examination was benefical to the diagnosis.Right hemicolectomy was standard operation method.[Conclusions]It is difficult to diagnose primary appendix adenocarcinoma preoperatively, the correct diagnosis relied on pathological examination during or after operation.Tumors in stage I may be treated with appendectomy alone, right hemicolectomy(RH) is still the most commonly recommended surgical option for tumors in higher stages.
