Abstract

The paper reviews the present understanding of the climatic effects of stratospheric chemical composition within the general framework of climate modeling. The modulation of radiative fluxes by carbon dioxide, ozone, and aerosols provides an input to climate models. It is difficult observationally to distinguish between climate variation forced by changes in these or other external parameters and internal noise of the system. Indeed, ozone concentration is so coupled to atmospheric dynamics that it should be regarded as one of the internal variables. One-dimensional vertical and latitudinal climate models are described, and their conclusions as to tropospheric and stratospheric climate change discussed.
