Abstract

Climate change creates operational, infrastructure, and business risks for European aviation. To adapt to those risks it is essential to understand and quantify them. This paper presents results from a new study from EUROCONTROL, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, on two climate change impacts that are expected to cause significant operational disruption and damage to infrastructure for the sector: how will changes in frequency and intensity of storms impact delays and flight efficiency, and to what extent are European airports at risks of flooding from sea level rise and storm surge? The study finds that by 2050 overall delays due to major storms may decrease. However, when there is a delay due to a major storm it will be greater than it is today. By the end of the century, risks of marine flooding of coastal airports will increase, impacting capacity and costs.
