Abstract

In this study, we have improved and verified the CLIL, Content and Language Integrated Learning, lecture designed to create English interaction in the regular science class of engineering education. The main changes for the CLIL lecture of 2021 are the following three points. (1) Inclusion of presentation exercise, (2) Change the explanation method of grammar in lecture-based teaching, (3) The use of supplemental Japanese for English vocabulary. The first-year students at the National Institute of Technology (KOSEN), Ube College took the CLIL lecture in the chemistry class. The results in 2021 improved compared to 2020 in both the score of the questionnaire and the pre and post tasks. The quantitative content analysis showed that the content of students′ reports changed to more specialized descriptions, such as the phenomenon and properties of chemistry. These improvements may be reflected by the impact of modified CLIL-based lectures that includes the presentation exercises.
