Abstract

The CLEO detector and the CESR collider are both in the midst of a staged upgrade. “Phase II” of this plan is just being completed, enhancing CLEO's tracking capabilities and bringing CESR instantaneous luminosities to 6 · 10 32 cm −2 s −1 . During a shutdown planned for late 1997 CLEO will install a Ring-Imaging Cherenkov system for enhanced particle identification, as well as a new drift chamber and silicon vertex detector. CESR will install superconducting RF cavities at that time, so that peak luminosities will exceed 10 33 cm −2 s −1 .
