Abstract

1. It has been experimentally confirmed that the cleavage of the O-C bond in ethers by the simultaneous action of PBr3 and concentrated HBr proceeds via the formation of alkyl phosphites. 2. The ease of cleavage of the O-C bond in ethers depends on their structure and decreases in the following series: Me-O > R1R2CH-O >RCH2-O 3. In the case of a secondary alkyl group, the cleavage of the O-C bond proceeds preferentially by the SN1 mechanism, and not by SN2, as previously assumed.
