Abstract

If your department hasn’t assessed its overall functioning for a while, consider doing it soon. Strategic planning helps departments progress to a stronger position in the future. Specifically, it will help determine where your department stands now, its current assets, where it can be, and how to get there. It will also determine whether, and how effectively, those goals have been achieved. Unlike tactics, which employ short‐term or immediate action conducted with the resources at hand, a strategic plan evolves over time as forces, conditions, and resources change.
