Abstract

This paper will deal with the first-known installation of a venturi scrubber on a sinter plant. The project was a step in a program by which the steel industry is cooperating with County authorities to improve atmospheric conditions in the Pittsburgh area. The installation was a success from the standpoint of meeting legal air pollution requirements, but many critical problems developed almost immediately in the area of maintenance of the new facilities. The fan rotor and housing, sludge pumps, and other parts of the system showed excessive wear to the point of failure within a comparatively few days, in spite of extensive use of stainless steels and rubber linings. This report will cover a description of the cleaning equipment, the problems that developed, and a discussion of the steps that have been taken in an attempt to solve the problems. Many of the troubles have been minimized, but others are still being studied with some queotions as yet unanswered.
