Abstract

AbstractThe contamination of arable lands with toxic heavy metals is a serious problem. The reduction in the arable land area affects the food security of the increasing population. Likewise, heavy use of fossil fuels releases a surplus quantity of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which leads to an alarming rise in atmospheric temperature and global warming. In this scenario, the cultivation of energy plants in polluted lands for phytoremediation gets the double benefits of bioenergy production and decontamination of land. With the use and production of bioenergy, the effective utilization of a country’s biomass is enhanced, which results in the considerable reduction of the use of fossil fuels and associated energy sources. Therefore, the use of bioenergy as a renewable energy source plays a significant role in reducing the environmental impact in relation to CO2 emissions.
