Abstract

Four distinct clay-mineral provinces are identified in Peoria loess in the Mississippi River basin: upper Ohio, Wabash-Illinois, upper Mississippi-Missouri, and lower Mississippi. The kaolinite-illite-expandable mineral compositions and the vermiculite-montmorillonite compositions differ distinctly in these depositional provinces. The upper Mississippi-Missouri province, 60% of the area of the Mississippi River Basin, is the dominant source region for clay minerals in the Peoria loess along the lower Mississippi Valley.
