Session 3.8: Building Design and Construction for Effective Acoustic Performance Classroom Noise at ARL Penn State by Marshall Long The Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State is a well known center of acoustics education in the United States. When Marshall Long Acoustics was selected to be the acoustical engineer on the new ARL building, we were particularly careful to check every noise source. When we went out on the final inspection, the question arose, “Why is the background noise level NC 42 in a classroom when it should be under 30?” The answer was not so elementary my dear Watson.
