Abstract

The Chironomidae, one of the most important aquatic insect families, are easily sampled by collecting their floating pupal exuviae. This technique permits the family to be used in the biological classification of lakes and rivers. This paper describes work carried out on English rivers using qualitative collections of chironomid pupal exuviae to erect practical classifications of rivers both for management and water quality surveillance purposes.
