Classifying problematic sexual behavior: A working model

Abstract

A variety of factors have long separated the fields of sexual addiction and sexual offense behavior. Recent literature has examined the similarities and differences between clients from both fields and has suggested that there may be more overlap between the two populations than was once thought. The barriers that have kept the fields from working together on assessment and treatment issues are being replaced by bridges that provide promise for clients suffering from these problematic sexual behaviors. This article proposes a 4-quadrant model of conceptualizing clients with problematic sexual behaviors. These 4 quadrants represent the sexually addicted sex offender, the sexual addict, the sexual offender, and the sexually concerned. Characteristics, assessment, and treatment of these populations are discussed to emphasize the similarities and suggest categorical differences. This article is based on previous literature and anecdotal clinical information. The authors attempt to synthesize previously discussed concepts into an integrated model for clinical application and future research.
