Abstract

Two-dimensional electrons confined by a circular infinite barrier potential and exposed to a homogeneous magnetic field are studied analytically in a quasiclassical approximation. In contrast to the frequently used parabolic confinement potential for quantum dots, the infinite barrier potential defines an edge. This allows a complete classification of the electron states with respect to the topology of their classical trajectories within the confining potential.
