Abstract
The classification and nomenclature of sandstones has evolved over the years into a system which is now generally accepted as standard. However, no equivalent system exists for the poorly-sorted sedimentary rocks which include grain sizes from clay to gravel. A descriptive classification is proposed, based on an earlier system, but using updated nomenclature and lithological fields. Such a scheme is needed to clearly define lithological terms currently used in the description of sedimentary sequences.
