Abstract

Concrete-polymer composites are the materials made by replacing a part or all of the cement hydrate binder of conventional mortar or concrete with polymers, and by strengthening the cement hydrate binder with the polymers. The concrete-polymer composites are generally classified into the following three types by the principles of their process technology: Polymer-modified mortar and concrete, Polymer mortar and concrete, Polymer-impregnated mortar and concrete. The principle of modification of cement mortar and concrete with redispersible polymer powder is almost the same as that of modification with latex except that it involves the addition of redispersible polymer powder. The polymer content of the modified mortar and concrete is generally higher than that of latex-modified systems. The principle of modification of cement composites with monomers is about the same as that of liquid resin modification except that it involves the addition of monomers instead of liquid resins.
