Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive approach to categorizing different types of animated maps. Based on several features such as interactivity, temporal aspect, the usage of dynamic symbols and previous methods of categorization, this framework establishes three broad categories: sequence animation, 3D animation and thematic animation. This classification proposes subtypes of each category and develops their importance in presenting geographical data. As such, this framework can help designers and researchers better understand the strengths and limitations of different types of animated maps and develop more effective visualizations that meet the needs of specific users and contexts.
