Abstract
By considering head-on collisions, it is shown that the classical theory of point charges and point monopoles is inconsistent if there is no spin. In the presence of spin, the theory is consistent but contains an anomaly, similar to the well-known field-theoretic anomalies. This leads to a simple picture of some aspects of the physics of monopole catalysis of baryon decay.
