Abstract

Theoretical approaches suggested that the crystal shape near a smooth edge should show a non-classical critical behaviour. A generalized mean field analysis of the available experimental data in small Pb crystals is given. The same framework is used to analyse sharp edges in the surface of small gold crystals. It is shown that the experiments are consistent with a classical critical behaviour in contrast with recent interpretations.
