Abstract

My first inclination was to write on the "Portuguese Revolution," but on further consideration I decided that this choice of title might be more misleading than helpful. In one sense, to be sure, what is happening in Portugal today is most certainly a revolutionary process. The old structure of power has been overturned, and the established pattern of social relations has been thrown into turmoil.
