Abstract

This chapter focuses on the interplay among class, status and labour market outcomes in contemporary Japan. In the preceding chapters we analyzed separately the status attainment process and the patterns of class mobility. In this chapter, the relationship between class and the process of socioeconomic attainment will be examined. We will (1) investigate the relationship between class and the distribution of status characteristics, (2) compare the effect of class on rewards in the labour market (income, home ownership and stock holdings) with the effects of education and occupational status, and (3) examine the effect of class on the relationship between education and labour market rewards.KeywordsFirm SizeOccupational StatusClass StructureHome OwnershipOccupational PrestigeThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
