Abstract
This chapter is a brief overview of the histories of Kurdish nationalism in Iran and Syria and has two purposes. First, the stories of the Kurdish movements of Iran and Syria ‘complete’ the history of Kurdish nationalism presented in this volume and help understand the events of Turkey and Iraq discussed in the previous chapters. Second, this chapter shows that some of the same dynamics that are the book’s central focus were at play in these two regions as well. Particularly, the interactions and conflicts between the Kurdish tribal and landowning elite, the peasantry and the urban middle classes followed similar patterns while a different distribution of power and degree of incorporation by the state engendered different trajectories for Kurdish nationalism.
