Abstract

Whether the rapid swelling in volume of funds for supporting research has been an influence upon more than it has been influenced by areas of popularity in science is not easy to say. Whatever the answer, growth of grant funds has had significant effect on making some characteristics of the scientific world stand out more strongly. In science as elsewhere there is a drive to build prestigious monuments. The scientists share with the rest of humanity the drive for class distinction and pecking order. And the pressure of sustained drumming of demands and politically organized struggles for the fuel for power are used and are effective; though the power may derive from accomplishment, financial support is needed to get there.
