Abstract

the dissertation and it remained undescribed in the essentially unchanged section of Osinites in Species plantarum (Linnaeus, 1763: 1285). The three species were 0. bellidiastrurn (L.) L., O. camphorina L., and 0. asteriscoides L. Osmites bellidiastrum is a Relhania species, formerly known as R. ericoides but now called R. fruticosa (Bremer, 1976: 30). Osmnites camphorina and 0. asteriscoides both belong to Osmitopsis asteriscoides (Bremer, 1972: 40). In Genera plantarum (Linnaeus, 1764: 984) the genus was described, the description being based on O. bellidiastrum, that is, the Relhania species (Bremer, 1972: 14). Many characters point to this species. The inner involucral bracts are described as widened above (foliolis intimis apice auctis), and the ray-florets provided with a style (femineis: stylus filiformis, longitudine corollulae), characters which correspond to the Relhania species but not to Osmitopsis asteriscoides. Accordingly, Osmites should not be typified by O. camphorina or O. asteriscoides but must be typified by 0. bellidiastrum. Cassini (1825: 6), followed by Guillemin (1827: 489), erroneously suggested the typification of Osmites by 0. camphorina, but this does not fit the original description of the genus. Osmites L. is thus an earlier name for the genus known as Relhania L'Herit., and I repeat my proposal to conserve the latter in the interest of nomenclatural stability.
