Abstract

A remarkably simple method is put forward for determining the Clar number CL (=number of aromatic sextets in any of the Clar formulae) of a catacondensed benzenoid hydrocarbon. CL is equal to the minimum number of straight lines required to intersect all hexagons. The connection of this result with the concept of resonance graph is outlined.
