Abstract

Civil War Battlefield:Culpeper, Virginia 2019 Michael Pittard (bio) There's no one else here.Only the rusty cutoutsilhouettes of riflemen, fingers waiting to fire. On the cedar mountain, radio antennae blinkblue & green lights.Ticks crawl on every blade of grass & chest-high weed & purple flower.I read that these battlesonly matter moment by moment. A cannonball here, an unsheathedsaber there, allflourishes & folderol. Some men come hereevery August, sleeptogether in the thicket, rush & stab & hold each other, reenacthunger, pain, a dyingcall. Why have wecome here? [End Page 77] The signage talksof trampled corn & wheat. You gather buttercups& dragonfly husks. I trace names on allthe headstones, myfingers steady & true.
