Abstract
On July 1, the great majority of American hospitals will be qualified for participation in Medicare—qualified on the basis of health-care standards (which are similar to those of the Joint Commission of the Accreditation of Hospitals) and qualified also under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. The physician can be of enormous help in the next several weeks in seeing to it that the hospitals in his community are numbered among these qualified institutions. Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in any institution receiving financial aid from the US government. It applies not only to Medicare but to some 50 other federal programs which at the present time extend aid or support to hospitals, including the Hill-Burton program, other grant programs administered by the Public Health Service, and other programs administered by the federal government.
