Abstract

The range of civic engagement activities in higher education is very diverse and the range of approaches and contexts in which these activities take place is also diverse. In this chapter, results from the first survey to review the nature and extent of civic engagement in Irish higher education are discussed. The survey aimed to generate data on the institutional contexts within which civic engagement activities are taking place, outline what practitioners are actually doing, and describe the types of partnerships that exist between academic and civic communities. In discussing the results of the survey, this chapter reflects on the current policy context informing the institutionalization of civic engagement in Irish higher education and the implications for current policy arising from the information gathered in this survey.KeywordsHigh Education InstitutionCommunity EngagementCivic EngagementPublic EngagementTeacher Training CollegeThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
