Abstract
In the era of the transformation of heavily industrialised areas, settlements occupy a very important place. Due to decarbonisation and the transition to zero-emission sources, the urban fabric, the local economy and the mentality of the inhabitants all change. Urban areas that have had an economy for many years based on coal mining face the greatest economic shock and challenge, and this may cause them to collapse. An example such a transformation has been Wałbrzych in Poland. The aim of the article is to present the changes and trends following the political and economic transformations and show how a city can move onto a path of relative climate neutrality in the postindustrial era.
