Abstract

The purpose of this chapter, which covers modernisation and globalisation in Chinese society over the last few decades, is to analyse how multiple citizenships in school music are put into practice, interpreted, and negotiated within educational settings. Learning multicultural citizenship in China intends to shape students’ different personal, national, and global citizenship identities in school music education in relation to the demands of the contemporary world. Despite the introduction of popular songs and other world music in school education, this chapter will argue that education for multiple citizenship continues to consolidate the authority of the Chinese government by adopting traditional Chinese cultural and socialist values as found in creative music making in the music curriculum.
