Abstract

A cis-dioxomolybdenum Schiff base complex, MoO2(L)(CH3OH), has been synthesized by reacting MoO2(acac)2 with isonicotinic acid hydrazide in refluxed methanol. The synthesized dioxomolybdenum complex was characterized by elemental analysis and diverse spectroscopic methods, for example, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and 1H and 13C NMR. The single crystal X-ray diffraction technique was used to determine the structure of the complex, which indicates that Mo(VI) ion is hexa coordinated and adopts a distorted octahedral coordination geometry on complexation. The synthesized complex is novel for its catalytic potential for the oxidation of aryl and alkyl sulfides under refluxing conditions in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and ethanol. This method generates the required sulfoxides and sulfones with high yields in short intervals of time.
