Abstract

Objective: To report hearing results of primary stapes surgery for otosclerosis in a consecutive series of 99 ears. Materials and methods: Retrospective chart review of eightyfour consecutive patients who underwent stapedectomy (99 ears) in a District General Hospital. Results: The mean 4-frequency (0.5, 1, 2 and 4 KHz) postoperative air-bone gap (ABG) was 5,4 dB, the preoperative minus postoperative ABG (hearing gain) was 23,1 dB. A postoperative ABG ≤10 dB was obtained in 87,5% of cases. A significant postoperative sensorineural hearing loss (>15 dB) was seen in 5,9% of cases. Conclusion: Our data support the efficacy and safety of stapes surgery for otosclerosis.
