Abstract

Cirrhosis is the development of damage and subsequent scarring of hepatic tissues leading to the development of fibrosis. The development of cirrhosis is one of the major risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is the sixth most common form of cancer worldwide and the fourth cause of cancer-related deaths. This is often because HCC is not diagnosed until it has reached advanced stages. In the United States and Europe, HCC is staged and managed according to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer system. Treatment for HCC includes transplantation, surgical resection, locoregional radiology therapies, targeted systemic chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. This article is an overview of cirrhosis, HCC, and various treatment modalities and associated postprocedural syndromes.
