Abstract

We present a theoretical analysis of the diffraction of sound pulses on elastic cylinders in terms of circumferential waves. In particular, the speed of the pulse heads and the critical angles for entering and leaving the cylinder are obtained from causality arguments. Our conclusions are verified experimentally in the accompanying letter by Goodman et al.
